Window Repairs - Checklist for Home Maintenance

Like any other part of your home, you should conduct a regular check for window repairs or window glass replacement needs. During the audit, compile a window repair and maintenance list and decide on a course of action.

You will end up spending more money on repairs if you don’t take the time to inspect and maintain your windows at least once a year.

Below are some suggestions about what to include on your maintenance checklist

Check the paint or varnish - if it is chipped or peeling, it may just need a lick of paint.

Check the window caulking – remove any damaged sealant and replace with new material

Clean dust and other debris from the window frames and tracks as debris may interfere with window sealing

Look for water damage – if you find evidence of moisture on the frame, the sill, or the surrounding wall and try to find the origin of the water. Also, check whether there is any sign of dampness inside. If you find moisture, repair the problem or call in the experts.

Check weep holes and breather holes. If necessary clean the holes out with a pin or paper clip.

Make sure that all window seals, locks, and other moving components are in good working order. If the window sticks, wax the surfaces. Refasten any locks and latches that have loosened.

Clean the screens – pop them out of the window and use a non-abrasive cleaner to clear out the muck. Inspect the spline to make sure that it is still in good order.

Check the weather stripping. If any of it is broken or loose repair or replace it.
